“I will say this: This was not a random attack. We do believe this was targeted,” SDPD Lt. Jud Campbell said, according to AFP.

Three people are dead, including the suspect involved in the shooting, and a Harbor Police officer is hospitalized with a gunshot wound following a series of shootings in San Diego. The city's homicide unit has shared details about their ongoing investigation into the daylight killings.

At a press conference on Wednesday at 2:30 p.m., SDPD Lt. Jud Campbell provided information from the scene near the intersection of Juniper Street and Kettner Boulevard, where a 26-year-old man was killed. Two Harbor Police officers had returned fire after their colleague was struck in the thigh by a bullet. The officer did not discharge his weapon during the exchange.

Lt. Campbell reported that the victims, a 39-year-old man and a 31-year-old woman, were inside a vehicle when they were shot around 8:22 a.m. Officers arrived at the scene, pulled the victims from the car, and attempted CPR but were unable to save them.

Though the investigation was still in its early stages, Campbell confirmed that the attack was not random, stating, “We do believe this was targeted.”

Homicide Capt. Manuel del Toro, who spoke alongside Campbell, added further details about the relationships between the victims and their killer. “We think that the three knew each other and that there was also a motive for this,” del Toro explained in Spanish. “He shot many times with a lot of hatred and aimed at the two of them, so we think there is a connection. That is what we are investigating.”

Police quickly circulated a description of the gunman, who was reported to be wearing a hat, green shirt, and blue jeans. The description was broadcast to all nearby units and a police helicopter, which helped spread the information rapidly.

Around 9:06 a.m., two Harbor Police officers in the area were flagged down by a citizen who had seen a man ducking behind an electrical box. The citizen, after hearing the helicopter broadcast, realized the man might be the suspect the police were searching for.

Four Harbor Police officers responded to the location, issuing commands to the man hiding behind the box. As they approached, the suspect began firing multiple rounds at the officers. In return, two of the officers fired back, hitting the suspect. One Harbor Police officer was also struck in the thigh during the exchange.

The suspect, who was shot multiple times, was transported to the hospital but later died from his injuries. Investigators found a semi-automatic handgun and discharged shell casings at the scene.

Campbell confirmed that multiple witnesses have provided statements, and investigators are reviewing video surveillance from the area. Two separate homicide teams are working on the investigation, one focused on each shooting scene.
