Shrewsbury Town have appointed Gareth Ainsworth as their new manager.

The Shropshire club currently sit at the bottom of the League One table, having gathered only eight points from their first 15 matches. They have been without a head coach for over a week following the dismissal of Paul Hurst.

Ainsworth, best known for his 11-year managerial tenure at Wycombe Wanderers, has been out of work for the past year.

His most recent role was a brief spell with QPR, where he previously spent time as both a player and a coach.

Starting his senior football career with Norwich Victoria, the 51-year-old midfielder also represented clubs such as Preston North End, Port Vale, and Lincoln City, alongside his stints at Loftus Road and Adams Park.

Ainsworth will have to wait for his first match in charge of Shrewsbury due to the international break, with the League One strugglers’ next fixture set for 23 November against Birmingham City.

Their subsequent match will see them face Steve Bruce’s Blackpool, who are also experiencing difficulties this season.

The fixture is currently scheduled for Tuesday, 3 December, although it could be postponed by a day due to the Seasiders’ FA Cup involvement on the preceding Sunday.
