Cole Palmer has ignited fresh speculation about his fitness ahead of Chelsea's pivotal London derby against Arsenal, following a recent post on social media.
Chelsea Star Cole Palmer Provides Cryptic Update on Injury Ahead of Arsenal Showdown
The Blues' talisman sustained a harsh tackle from Lisandro Martinez during last weekend's draw with Manchester United, sparking concerns all week regarding his availability for Sunday’s high-stakes match.
Palmer, 22, was spotted at Chelsea's emphatic 8-0 victory over FC Noah midweek, though head coach Enzo Maresca remained guarded when asked about the England midfielder's condition on Friday.
However, Palmer has since dropped his strongest hint yet about being ready to feature against the Gunners, sharing an image on Instagram of his leg wrapped in a 'game ready' hot and cold compression device on Friday evening.
Chelsea are undoubtedly keen to have Palmer available for Sunday’s crucial encounter, given his exceptional form this season: the attacking midfielder has netted seven goals in Chelsea’s ten Premier League matches thus far, along with five assists.
Palmer has also been named in Lee Carsley's final England squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures against Greece and the Republic of Ireland during the international break.
Fans were encouraged by Palmer’s presence midweek, although Maresca moved to temper expectations after Palmer was seen dining at Stamford Bridge. The Blues' head coach has not entirely ruled him out, however.
The Italian commented: “He's improving. He’s on the mend. Just because he can walk and have dinner doesn’t mean he’s fully fit. He’s getting better, and we still have two days to prepare for the game.
“Hopefully, he can join at least one session on Saturday, and we’ll then make a decision.”
Chelsea approach Sunday’s showdown with Arsenal marginally ahead of their London rivals in the Premier League table on goal difference. Mikel Arteta’s side, meanwhile, will be looking to close the gap on Manchester City following their unexpected defeat at Brighton, though league leaders Liverpool extended their lead with another win against Aston Villa.
