Manchester United target Rúben Amorim has vowed to confirm his future coaching plans following Sporting Lisbon’s Portuguese league match on Friday evening.

Speaking on Thursday at a press conference ahead of Sporting’s clash with league leaders Estrela da Amadora, Amorim addressed speculation surrounding his potential move. Sporting have made an impressive start to their title defence with nine consecutive wins.

“After tomorrow’s game, we will have made the decision,” Amorim said. “It will be very clear, so it’s just one more day.”

The 39-year-old manager’s rising reputation and his achievement of two Portuguese league titles in four seasons have attracted interest from Man United, who dismissed Erik ten Hag on Monday with the club languishing in 14th place in the English Premier League.

Sporting subsequently released a statement to the Lisbon Stock Exchange confirming United’s interest in paying the €10 million (£8.3 million) release clause in Amorim’s contract.

“It’s a negotiation between two clubs,” Amorim stated on Thursday. “It’s never straightforward. Even with the release clause, discussions are necessary.”

Reports in both English and Portuguese media suggest Amorim could move to Manchester during the upcoming international break, with his potential debut as United manager set for 24th November against Ipswich.

One of Amorim’s likely final games with Sporting is set to be a Champions League fixture at home against Manchester City on Tuesday.

Amorim had previously been linked to a possible role at Man City, where Pep Guardiola has not yet publicly confirmed whether he will extend his contract, which is due to expire at the end of the season. City’s future director of football, Hugo Viana, will also be joining from Sporting after the season.

In the meantime, Manchester United were led by interim manager Ruud van Nistelrooy on Wednesday, securing a 5-2 victory over Leicester City in the English League Cup.

Van Nistelrooy, a former United striker who returned over the summer to assist his fellow Dutchman Ten Hag, appears likely to remain in charge for United’s next three home games: Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday, followed by PAOK in the Europa League, and another Premier League encounter with Leicester on 10th November.
