Manchester City and Liverpool resisted the temptation to extend an offer to Ruben Amorim to manage in the Premier League, as they both felt the 39-year-old’s style of play was not a suitable match. Manchester United are set to appoint the Sporting Lisbon manager as their new head coach, having dismissed Erik ten Hag on Monday, bringing an end to his disappointing tenure at the club.

The Red Devils have endured their worst start to a Premier League season, sitting in 14th place with only three victories from their first nine fixtures.

United have informed Sporting that they are prepared to pay the £8.3 million release clause required to end Amorim’s time in Portugal, aiming to have him installed at Old Trafford by the weekend.

Amorim has excelled in his early managerial career, guiding Sporting to two league titles in his four seasons at Estádio José Alvalade.

The Portuguese coach has been linked with a move to the Premier League since last season, with Liverpool and West Ham both engaging in discussions with him earlier this year.

With Pep Guardiola’s future at the Etihad Stadium uncertain as he approaches the end of his contract, Amorim had also been speculated to reunite with Hugo Viana when Sporting's director of football transitions to City next summer, taking over from Txiki Begiristain.

However, according to The Athletic, both Etihad and Anfield declined the former midfielder due to his tactical preferences.

City refrained from pursuing him, believing his style does not align with their vision, a stance Liverpool similarly adopted during the summer.

The outlet suggests that many familiar with Viana’s work in Portugal were confident the director would have desired Amorim to join him at City. However, this move will not come to fruition.

United are reportedly in discussions with Sporting regarding Amorim’s start date at Old Trafford, as he has a notice period of a few weeks.

Club officials at Old Trafford are keen to bring him to Manchester as soon as possible, hoping he can engineer a significant improvement in the team’s fortunes.

United have won just three Premier League matches this season and have drawn all three of their Europa League fixtures. The team currently trails Premier League leaders Manchester City by 12 points and sits six points behind group leaders Lazio in Europe.
