The Football Association has charged a Manchester United coach with misconduct following a heated incident during the club's recent victory over Brentford.

The match remained goalless as it approached first-half stoppage time when referee Samuel Barrott instructed Manchester United defender Matthijs de Ligt to leave the pitch for treatment on a head injury that was bleeding heavily. With De Ligt sidelined, Brentford capitalised on the defensive gap, taking the lead through Ethan Pinnock’s header, which led to uproar in the technical area.

Both United manager Erik ten Hag and assistant coach Ruud van Nistelrooy received bookings for their on-pitch reactions, while first-team coach Darren Fletcher was seen expressing frustration towards the officials as the teams headed off for half-time.

In an official statement, the FA announced: “Darren Fletcher has been charged with misconduct following Manchester United’s fixture against Brentford on Saturday, 20 October, in the Premier League.

“It is alleged that the coach acted in an improper and/or confrontational manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting language towards the fourth official, as well as the referee and/or assistant referees.”

Fletcher has been given until Tuesday, 29 October, to respond to the charge.
