Former Arsenal manager Arsène Wenger has somewhat unexpectedly defended Manchester City amid their legal dispute with the Premier League.

City are currently facing 115 charges related to alleged Financial Fair Play breaches from 2009 to 2018.

In a landmark decision in an unrelated case earlier this month, the reigning champions secured a significant victory, as reported by the Mail Sport’s Mike Keegan.

A panel of retired judges ruled that the Associated Party Transaction (APT) rules connected to City’s owners violate the Competition Act.

The case is anticipated to continue for several months, and Wenger believes the situation has escalated excessively.

Speaking to beIN SPORTS, he said: “I feel that the current Financial Fair Play rules in the Premier League need to be revised.

“Other leagues have adjusted their Financial Fair Play regulations, and the Premier League now faces increasing competition from them.

“At present, it’s inconceivable to hear of a club like Manchester City being charged with 115 separate allegations in a football season. I find that hard to believe.

“The Premier League has already lost the initial case against them. I don’t know the City team personally, so I can’t judge them.

“However, I do think that 115 individual charges against one football club makes it seem as if we’re operating under an international administration.

“Financial Fair Play rules must be simplified and reformed.

“When City’s owners arrived, they were not bound by any Financial Fair Play rules, nor was Chelsea.

“Chelsea were able to buy my players from Arsenal and, like City, to purchase as they pleased since no Financial Fair Play rules were in effect at that time.”
