A tragic accident on Monday in Ibadan involving a trailer and a lorry resulted in at least six deaths and several injuries. The incident was caused by brake failure and led to significant traffic congestion.

At least six individuals lost their lives, and several others sustained injuries in a tragic accident on Monday involving a trailer transporting tiles and a lorry loaded with soft drinks. The incident occurred at Oke Eleshin, Amuloko, along Akanran Road in Ibadan.

Among the injured was a pupil whose mother reportedly perished in the crash. Four of the injured were taken to the nearby Amuloko City Hospital, where two primary school children received outpatient treatment. Meanwhile, two individuals with more severe injuries were admitted for further medical care.

The deceased individuals were transported to a hospital, the name of which has not yet been confirmed.

An anonymous staff member of the Oyo Road Transport Maintenance Agency (OYRTMA) reported that the accident happened in the early hours of the day, attributing it to brake failure in the trailer that was descending the slope of the road. The driver lost control of the trailer, which subsequently crashed into a tricycle commonly known as Keke NAPEP. Another lorry carrying soft drinks, coming from behind, attempted to avoid colliding with the trailer but ended up hitting and crushing another Keke NAPEP. According to the OYRTMA staff member, six people died, and five others sustained injuries, all of whom have been taken from the scene.

The accident led to severe traffic congestion, forcing passengers to disembark and walk while many others parked their vehicles along the roadside, awaiting the arrival of security operatives to clear the wreckage.

In addition to the two articulated vehicles and the two tricycles involved in the crash, two other cars were damaged in the multiple-vehicle collision.

Sympathizers present at the scene, who were prevented from setting the vehicles on fire, blamed the drivers—who had fled the scene—claiming that the accident could have been mitigated had the driver of the out-of-control vehicle swerved into a ditch instead of colliding with the incoming tricycle.

Security personnel at the scene included members of Operation Burst, OYRTMA, the Police, Road Safety, Amotekun, and local vigilante groups.

When reached for comment, Mrs. Rosemary Alo, the Commander of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) for Oyo Command, confirmed the occurrence of the accident but stated that she would provide official details after her team briefed her appropriately. Oyo Police Public Relations Officer Adewale Osifeso indicated that the FRSC Commander would deliver a comprehensive report on the accident.
