The workers, who have been on strike for seven days, are protesting against low wages. Their strike has led to significant disruptions in production at the plant.

Indian police have detained 104 striking workers and union leaders at a Samsung Electronics plant located in southern India. The detentions occurred as the workers had been protesting at a makeshift tent near the plant since last week. Their demands include higher wages, formal recognition of a union supported by the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), and improved working hours.

On Monday, the workers intended to initiate a protest march. However, they were detained because permission was not granted for the march. Senior police officer K. Shanmugam from the Kancheepuram district explained that the area is home to schools, colleges, and hospitals, and such a protest could lead to significant disruption and disturbance of public peace.

Shanmugam further stated that the detainees are being held in wedding halls, as accommodating all of them in police stations was not feasible. The ongoing strike has notably impacted Samsung's operations in India, with the Chennai plant contributing approximately one-third of the company's annual revenue in the country.
