Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard is set to undergo a scan on his ankle injury upon returning to London, after limping off during Norway’s Nations League victory over Austria.

The Gunners midfielder was seen clutching his left ankle following an innocuous-looking challenge with Christoph Baumgartner around the hour mark of Monday night’s match in Oslo. Ødegaard was helped off the pitch in tears by his team-mate Erling Haaland.

Ødegaard’s injury is likely to be another blow for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who is already without the suspended Declan Rice for this weekend’s North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur.

The 25-year-old former Real Madrid midfielder returned to England on Tuesday morning, as Norwegian media photographed him on crutches while being assisted to board a private jet.

Norway team doctor Ola Sand explained that Arsenal will now assess the extent of Ødegaard’s injury.

“He is on his way to London and will have an MRI scan later today,” Sand told the Norwegian newspaper VG. When asked for his initial assessment, Sand added: “It appears to be a significant sprain, but we will await Arsenal’s findings.”
