Anthony Martial has reportedly been presented with a substantial contract offer to join Greek side AEK Athens, a deal that would make him the highest-paid player in the club’s history.

Manchester United released Martial this summer after nine years at the club. Now a free agent, the Frenchman continues to be linked with clubs across Europe, as well as potential moves to Saudi Arabia and the United States.

At 28 years of age, time is running out for the enigmatic forward to secure a major deal before his value diminishes even further.

Martial was once regarded as one of the most promising talents in Europe. His career at Old Trafford began with an iconic goal against Liverpool, where he isolated Martin Škrtel and calmly slotted the ball home after a skilful dribble through the Reds’ defence. However, apart from a few standout moments—most notably his 17-goal season in 2019/20—he failed to fully live up to the initial hype.

According to Sport 24 via The Sun, AEK Athens are undeterred by Martial’s previous wage of £250,000 per week at United. Former Tottenham winger Erik Lamela currently holds the title of the club’s highest earner, having joined in July in an attempt to revitalise his career following a disappointing stint at Sevilla.

Wherever Martial ultimately lands, the club acquiring him will be aware that they are gaining an exceptionally talented footballer whose commitment has often been questioned. Martial is a brilliant dribbler and a competent finisher, but his lack of positional awareness frequently frustrated United supporters.

He seldom displayed the urgency required to make decisive runs and often found himself out of position, missing opportunities to create space in the opponent’s area. His perceived lack of passion on the pitch also gave the impression that he was indifferent, leaving fans disappointed by what they saw as a lack of effort unworthy of his substantial salary.

Injuries have also played a significant role in derailing Martial’s career, to the point where he can go months without securing a new club. He suffered 20 different injuries from 2019 until his departure from United, as documented by Transfermarkt. Signing him to a long-term deal carries considerable risk.

Should AEK Athens proceed with the offer, they will undoubtedly acquire a player capable of winning matches at that level.

Martial is at his best when playing on instinct, supported by a team willing to work hard to get the ball to him. His next move is crucial for a career that has strayed so far off course that he has not been called up to the France squad since 2021.
