The singer-songwriter, a lifelong supporter of the club, has purchased a 1.4 per cent minority stake, as confirmed by Ipswich Town Football Club in a statement. Sheeran has been the front-of-shirt sponsor for both the men’s and women’s teams since 2021.
Ed Sheeran Acquires Stake in Ipswich Town Football Club
According to the club’s statement, Sheeran’s stake is described as a “passive and minority investment” and will not result in him joining the board or having voting rights as a shareholder.
The main benefit of this minority stake is the “long-term use of an executive box at Portman Road stadium, which he has personalised ahead of the 2024/25 season.”
Sheeran commented: “I am truly excited to have bought a small percentage of my hometown football club. It’s every football fan’s dream to own a part of the club they support, and I feel incredibly grateful for this opportunity.”
He continued: “I have lived in Suffolk since I was three years old, and while I travel the world and sometimes feel like an outsider in large cities, Suffolk and Ipswich have always made me feel part of the community and protected. It’s such a joy to be a fan of Ipswich Town. There are ups and downs, but football is all about experiencing the highs and lows. I’m not a voting shareholder or a board member; this is simply my way of investing in the club I love, and I hope not to be overwhelmed with suggestions or tactics! I’m excited for the Premier League to start this weekend. Let’s go!”
In other news, Sheeran recently announced that he has written and recorded a new song, ‘Under The Tree’, for an upcoming Christmas film directed by Simon Otto and produced by Richard Curtis. The song will feature in That Christmas, an animated film set to be released on Netflix on 6 December. The film stars Brian Cox, Fiona Shaw, Jodie Whittaker, and Bill Nighy, with Cox voicing Santa Claus and the others portraying residents of a seaside town where things take a turn one Christmas.
