Heavy rainfall triggered the collapse of a landfill in the Ugandan capital, Kampala. Rescue operations are ongoing as efforts to find additional victims continue.

According to Reuters, a landfill in the Ugandan capital of Kampala collapsed, resulting in the deaths of eight people, including two children, authorities reported on Saturday. The collapse occurred late on Friday due to heavy rainfall. The landfill, known as Kiteezi, has been Kampala's primary garbage dump for decades, evolving over time into a large mound of waste.

The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) announced on X, formerly known as Twitter, that "On a very sad note, eight people have so far been found dead, including six adults and two children."

A rescue operation is currently underway to locate survivors. The KCCA reported that 14 individuals have been rescued and taken to the hospital.

Kiteezi landfill is the largest of its kind in Kampala, and local residents have expressed concerns about its environmental impact and potential hazards to public safety. Eight months ago, the KCCA's ceremonial head labeled the situation at the landfill as a "national crisis."

Recent weeks have seen heavy rainfall in various regions of Uganda, though no fatalities related to the weather have been reported, according to authorities.
