Democratic Lawmaker Dismisses Aide for Wishing Assassin Had Succeeded in Killing Trump

Democratic U.S. lawmaker Bennie Thompson dismissed one of his aides following her controversial remarks wishing for the success of the assassin who attempted to kill former President Donald Trump during a Pennsylvania campaign event. Thompson, a member of the Homeland Security Committee, strongly condemned the attack that injured Trump and resulted in the death of one rally attendee in Butler, Pennsylvania, with several others critically wounded.
Jacqueline Marsaw, a field director for Thompson, sparked widespread outrage with a Facebook post suggesting the shooter should have aimed better. "I don’t condone violence, but please get you some shooting lessons so you don’t miss next time ooops, that wasn’t me talking," Marsaw wrote, though she later deleted the post after it went viral and triggered calls for her dismissal.
In response to the controversy, Thompson released a statement on Sunday addressing Marsaw's post, stating, "I was made aware of a post made by a staff member and she is no longer in my employment."
The incident, which has prompted international condemnation, is under thorough investigation by U.S. authorities. Disturbing footage showing Trump with blood on his face and ear has circulated widely online following the attack by Thomas Matthew Crooks, a 20-year-old from Pennsylvania, who was fatally shot by Secret Service agents during the event.
