Former Newcastle United captain Scott Parker has been appointed as Burnley’s new manager following Vincent Kompany’s departure. The Clarets had been managerless since Kompany moved to Bayern Munich, with several names linked to the vacancy. Craig Bellamy took temporary charge after Kompany left and was considered for the permanent role, but Burnley have chosen Parker instead.

The 43-year-old had been out of management for over a year after a disappointing stint at Belgian club Club Brugge, where he managed just two wins from 12 games in all competitions. Burnley will be Parker’s third managerial role in England, having previously guided both Fulham and Bournemouth to promotion from the Championship.

Commenting on his appointment at Turf Moor, Parker said: “I’m delighted to be here. I’ve been in discussions with Burnley for some time now, which has been a positive experience as I’ve been able to get a real sense of the people at the club.

“Being around the training ground now, you start to get that feeling again and I’m eager to get out on the training pitch and get to work. Our priority this season is to achieve success. We need to win matches and build a team that the fans and the club can be proud of. This team can represent every one of them, and that’s our goal.”

The former West Ham and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder reportedly edged out competition from Frank Lampard and former Manchester United striker Ruud van Nistelrooy for the role.
