In Nigeria’s commercial city of Lagos, several areas have experienced severe flooding that inundated homes and resulted in the collapse of a two-storey building, causing multiple injuries.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, attributed the incident to "inclement weather," noting that seven individuals were rescued alive from the collapsed structure.
The floods, which brought business and commercial activities to a standstill on Wednesday, followed a 10-hour downpour.
"Upon arrival at the scene, it was discovered that a newly constructed two-storey building had collapsed. Three females and four males were rescued alive and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment," Osanyintolu stated.
Social media footage showed stranded car owners stuck in deep floodwaters after their vehicles became partially submerged and broke down.
"Early this morning [Wednesday], seven people were rescued alive from a collapsed building in Ewenla, Mushin, due to the inclement weather," Osanyintolu added.
Authorities have advised residents to refrain from non-essential travel until the floods recede.
"We urge the residents of Lagos to remain calm and avoid unnecessary travel due to the flash floods affecting the state," Osanyintolu urged.
