Norwich City are reportedly competing with recently relegated Luton Town to secure the loan signing of Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O'Brien.

Transfer expert Alan Nixon has suggested that Norwich City are in the race to sign the 25-year-old this summer, although Nottingham Forest is holding out for a permanent deal before agreeing to another loan departure for the former Huddersfield midfielder.

O'Brien spent last season on loan at Norwich City's Championship rivals Middlesbrough, but his spell was hampered by injury.

Despite this, he made 25 appearances last season as Middlesbrough narrowly missed out on the play-offs, earning praise from manager Michael Carrick for his contributions in central midfield.

O'Brien is among several Forest players who have been informed that their futures lie elsewhere as the club deals with financial regulations.

Speaking to Teesside Live in April, O'Brien expressed his desire to remain at Riverside Stadium beyond his loan spell, but it seems unlikely after Boro reportedly opted not to pursue a fresh deal, leaving the door open for other opportunities.

"I don't have a clue, I'll have to see what happens in the summer," O'Brien said in April. "I've really enjoyed my time here and the time I've been playing. If it's the right time and the right things fall into place, I'd obviously love to come back here."

Originally from Colchester, O'Brien progressed through Huddersfield's academy, making over 100 appearances before joining Forest in 2022. He also had a loan spell in Major League Soccer with DC United before his stint at Middlesbrough.

This summer, O'Brien has been linked with Ipswich Town, and several Championship clubs are thought to be interested in securing his services.

Norwich's reported interest comes amid increasing speculation about midfield trio Kenny McLean, Gabriel Sara, and Marcelino Nunez, who are linked with moves away from the club.

While Norwich has already added Jose Cordoba to their squad this summer, they are expected to focus on the loan and free-agent markets to strengthen options under manager Johannes Hoff Thorup.
