Mourners from Malawi and various international dignitaries gathered at Nsipe Primary School grounds in Ntcheu, Central Malawi on Monday to attend the burial of Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima. Dr. Chilima tragically passed away in a plane crash on June 11, 2024.

During the ceremony, Elizabeth Mkandawire Mwanga, a representative of the bereaved family, delivered a eulogy describing Dr. Chilima as a joyful, compassionate individual with global leadership potential. She expressed gratitude to the United Transformation Movement (UTM), chiefs, and the people of Malawi for their support and love during the mourning period. Mwanga appealed to the government to conduct a thorough investigation into the crash to prevent such tragedies in the future, urging the nation to uphold Dr. Chilima's aspirations.

President Lazarus Chakwera, speaking at a prior funeral service held at Bing Stadium in Lilongwe, emphasized the need for an independent investigation, alongside the Malawi Defence Force's protocols, to uncover the truth behind the crash. He reassured the public that the findings would be transparently shared with all Malawians.

Notable figures in attendance included former presidents Bakili Muluzi and Peter Mutharika, former vice president Khumbo Kachali, and UTM Secretary General Patricial Kaliati. The solemn event saw Dr. Chilima's widow, Mary Chilima, President Chakwera and his wife, Monica Chakwera, and former President Peter Mutharika and his wife, Gertrude Mutharika, among others, paying their respects by laying wreaths.

The tragic plane crash occurred in Chikangawa Forest, Mzimba district, claiming the lives of Dr. Chilima and nine others.
