Major Fire Erupts at Geelong Oil Refinery in Australia, No Injuries Reported
Firefighters are currently battling a major blaze at the Viva Energy oil refinery near Geelong in Australia after a fire broke out late on Wednesday night. The incident began just after 11 p.m. local time at the refinery’s motor gasoline unit, where liquid fuels and gases were involved, making the situation more difficult to control.
Emergency services confirmed that while the fire has been contained within the plant area, it is still not fully under control. Fire Rescue authorities reported that crews remain on site working to prevent the flames from spreading further across the facility. Because of the nature of the materials involved, the fire is expected to continue burning for several hours as firefighters manage it carefully to avoid further risks.
Residents in Geelong and nearby communities were advised to stay indoors, keep windows and doors closed, and turn off heating and cooling systems as a precaution against smoke exposure. Although the alert caused concern in the surrounding area, officials later downgraded the threat level, stating that there is currently no danger to the public.
All refinery staff were safely accounted for, and no injuries have been reported. According to company officials, around 100 workers were on duty at the time of the incident, and all managed to evacuate without harm. Emergency responders and refinery management have since been working together to ensure the site remains stable.
The Geelong facility is one of only two remaining oil refineries in Australia and plays an important role in the country’s fuel supply, particularly for the state of Victoria, Australia. It processes large volumes of crude oil and supplies a significant portion of petrol, diesel, and jet fuel used locally and across the country.
Following the fire, refinery operations were scaled back to minimum safe levels while safety checks are carried out. Company officials stated that production will only return to normal once it is confirmed safe to do so. Authorities have also announced that an investigation will be conducted to determine what caused the fire, which at this stage appears to be accidental.
