Leeds United boosted their Premier League survival hopes with a vital 2-1 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford — their first league win at the venue in over four decades.
Leeds Secure Crucial Victory at Manchester United in Relegation Battle
A first-half brace from Noah Okafor set the tone for a memorable evening, as Leeds moved six points clear of the relegation zone following just their second away win of the season.
The visitors made a blistering start, with Okafor finding the net twice inside the opening 30 minutes, sparking jubilant scenes among the travelling supporters. Their task was made easier early in the second half when Lisandro Martinez was sent off following a VAR review for pulling the hair of Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
The result marks Leeds’ first league triumph at Old Trafford since 1981 and their first victory over United in any competition since their FA Cup success in 2010.
Head coach Daniel Farke expressed his pride after the match:
“I am extremely proud. It is our first Premier League win here at Old Trafford and our first league victory here in over 40 years.
“It feels outstanding, especially at this crucial stage of the season when we are playing under pressure.”
Despite the impressive result, Farke acknowledged that his side could have secured a more comfortable margin of victory:
“We created enough chances to finish the game earlier. In the end, we had to show resilience, but there is no doubt we deserved the win.”
Leeds now sit six points above 18th-placed Tottenham Hotspur, who were beaten 1-0 by Sunderland. Victory against Wolverhampton Wanderers at Elland Road on Saturday could extend that cushion to nine points.
Farke also addressed the narrative surrounding his team’s consistency:
“We are working hard to move away from the perception that Leeds struggle under pressure.
“This group has shown that we can deliver in difficult moments. However, nothing has been achieved yet. We must remain focused and continue pushing forward.”
Manchester United, reduced to ten men, mounted a spirited response after the break and pulled a goal back through Casemiro, who headed home in the 59th minute.
However, Leeds held firm to secure a historic and potentially decisive victory in their fight to avoid relegation.
The defeat also marked the first home loss for United under interim manager Michael Carrick, ending a run of five consecutive wins at Old Trafford.
