A magnificent unbeaten 97 from Sanju Samson propelled India to a thrilling five-wicket victory over West Indies on Sunday, sealing their place in the ICC T20 World Cup semi-finals where they will face England.
India Defeat West Indies to Book T20 World Cup Semi-Final Showdown with England
Chasing a formidable target of 196 at Eden Gardens, India reached 199-5 with four balls to spare, recording the highest successful run chase of this year’s tournament. The defending champions have now progressed to the semi-finals for a third successive edition.
India will meet England in Mumbai on Thursday, a day after South Africa take on New Zealand in the first semi-final.
West Indies Post Competitive Total
Having been put in to bat, West Indies compiled 195-4, courtesy of a powerful late surge from Rovman Powell and Jason Holder, whose unbroken 76-run stand came off just 35 deliveries.
The Caribbean side made a cautious start, accumulating 45 runs during the powerplay after Abhishek Sharma dropped Roston Chase at cover. Shai Hope (32) was dismissed in the ninth over, bowled by Varun Chakaravarthy’s googly.
Shimron Hetmyer struck a brisk 27 before Jasprit Bumrah (2-36) removed him, then accounted for Chase (40) two deliveries later, with Suryakumar Yadav producing a fine diving catch.
At 119-4 in the 15th over following Sherfane Rutherford’s dismissal, West Indies required impetus. Powell responded emphatically, striking Arshdeep Singh for two sixes and a boundary in a 24-run over to shift the momentum.
Powell (34) and Holder (37) then accelerated to lift their side to 195-4 — a total that appeared well beyond the highest previous successful T20 international chase at Eden Gardens.
Samson Leads Commanding Chase
India’s reply began shakily. Abhishek Sharma fell early to Akeal Hosein, while Ishan Kishan departed nine balls later to Holder, leaving the hosts 41-2.
With the required rate climbing into double figures, Samson assumed control. The opener reached his half-century in just 28 balls, striking three sixes and four boundaries in a composed yet authoritative innings.
Although captain Suryakumar (18) was dismissed, Tilak Varma maintained the momentum with three consecutive boundaries off Shamar Joseph and a towering strike down the ground, reducing the equation to 60 runs required from six overs.
Varma (27) and Hardik Pandya (17) fell during a tense closing phase, but Shivam Dube’s late boundaries left India needing seven from the final over.
Samson fittingly concluded the contest in style, launching Romario Shepherd over square leg for six before driving the winning boundary through mid-on. His 97 not out is now the highest individual score by an Indian in a T20 World Cup chase, surpassing Virat Kohli’s previous best of 82 against Australia and Pakistan.
‘One of the Greatest Days of My Life’
Named Player of the Match, Samson reflected on a landmark performance in his international career.
“I never felt I would do something special like this. I was simply focusing on my role and taking it one ball at a time. This is one of the greatest days of my life,” he said.
“Right from the day I started playing, I dreamt of representing my country. I’ve had a journey filled with ups and downs, moments of doubt, but I kept believing. I’m very grateful to the Almighty for blessing me today.”
Captain Suryakumar was equally fulsome in his praise.
“Good things happen to good people who wait,” he said. “All the hard work he has been putting in behind the scenes when he wasn’t playing has paid off at the perfect stage. The way he batted completely took the side to victory.”
India now turn their attention to a high-stakes semi-final against England, with confidence high following one of the most remarkable run chases in T20 World Cup history.
