Brighton & Hove Albion forward Danny Welbeck scored twice to hand his side a 2-1 Premier League victory over Liverpool at the Amex Stadium, dealing a significant setback to the visitors’ hopes of securing UEFA Champions League qualification.
Brighton Victory Deals Blow to Liverpool’s Champions League Ambitions
Liverpool, managed by Arne Slot, arrived on the south coast without key duo Alisson Becker and Mohamed Salah, and were seeking to recover from a disappointing run of domestic results.
Welbeck opened the scoring early in the contest, heading home to give Brighton the advantage. Liverpool responded through Milos Kerkez, who capitalised on a costly error from Lewis Dunk to restore parity in the first half.
However, Welbeck struck again in the second period, benefitting from a marginal offside decision to net his 12th league goal of the season and secure all three points for the hosts.
The result marks Brighton’s fourth win in five matches, lifting them back into the top half of the table, while Liverpool’s inconsistent league form continues to undermine their push for a top-four finish.
The visitors’ problems were compounded early on when leading scorer Hugo Ekitike was forced off with an injury just minutes into the match following a collision with James Milner.
Slot admitted the early setback disrupted his side’s plans.
“It was a significant blow for us,” he said.
“With limited striking options available — and Alexander Isak already absent — losing Hugo so early made things more difficult.
It is unfortunate, although we do not expect it to be a long-term injury. It was a setback for both the player and the team.”
Despite progressing to the Champions League quarter-finals in midweek with a 4-1 aggregate victory over Galatasaray, Liverpool have struggled to maintain consistency domestically.
“We have dropped too many points following European fixtures,” Slot added.
“We have discussed the reasons before, but today we must also give credit to Brighton.”
Brighton’s opening goal came after a defensive lapse, with Ibrahima Konate conceding possession deep in his own half. Following a cross from Ferdi Kadioglu, Diego Gomez headed the ball across goal for Welbeck to nod home.
Liverpool’s equaliser arrived in the 30th minute when Dunk inadvertently gifted possession, allowing Kerkez to capitalise with a composed finish over goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen.
Welbeck restored Brighton’s lead in the 56th minute, finishing from close range after good work by Yankuba Minteh and Jack Hinshelwood, with the goal confirmed following a VAR review.
Brighton continued to threaten, with goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili producing key saves to keep Liverpool in contention, including a strong stop from Gomez and a later denial of Minteh.
At the other end, Verbruggen was equally alert, notably saving from Curtis Jones and later parrying a powerful effort from Cody Gakpo as Liverpool searched for a late equaliser.
Slot introduced Andrew Robertson and Federico Chiesa in the closing stages, but the visitors struggled to create clear opportunities.
Substitute Yasin Ayari came close to extending Brighton’s lead, only to see his effort blocked, before the hosts held firm through seven minutes of added time.
The defeat leaves Liverpool on 49 points with seven matches remaining, facing an uphill battle to secure qualification for next season’s Champions League.
Forward Gakpo urged his team-mates to remain focused despite the setback.
“We must approach every game with the intention to win,” he said.
“That is the standard at a club of this size. In our current situation, we have to fight and aim to win all seven remaining matches.”
