The United States military has deployed drones and about 200 troops to Nigeria to support counterterrorism efforts through intelligence and training, not combat. The mission aims to help Nigeria better track and respond to threats from groups like Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province.

The United States military has increased its operational presence in Nigeria by deploying multiple MQ-9 Reaper drones along with approximately 200 personnel. This move is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to combat terrorist groups operating across the northern part of the country, particularly in regions that have faced years of insurgency and insecurity.
According to officials from both countries, the American troops are not directly involved in combat operations. Instead, their role is focused on providing specialized training, technical support, and intelligence-sharing to Nigerian forces. The deployed drones are being used strictly for surveillance and reconnaissance missions, collecting critical data on terrorist movements and activities, rather than carrying out airstrikes.
This deployment marks a notable step in the evolving security partnership between Nigeria and the United States. It follows reports of US airstrikes targeting terrorist elements in northwest Nigeria in late 2025, suggesting a gradual increase in US engagement in the region’s security challenges. Despite this, both governments have emphasized that the current mission remains non-combat in nature, with Nigerian forces maintaining full operational control on the ground.
A US defense official explained that the deployment was carried out at the request of the Nigerian government, highlighting the shared concern over the threat posed by extremist groups. The official described terrorism in the region as a mutual security challenge, reinforcing the importance of cooperation in intelligence and counterterrorism efforts.
Major General Samaila Uba, who serves as Director of Defence Information at Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, confirmed that US assets are currently operating from an airfield in Bauchi State in the northeast. He stated that the collaboration is part of a broader framework, including a recently established US-Nigeria intelligence fusion cell designed to enhance real-time information sharing and improve operational effectiveness.
Uba stressed that American personnel remain in a strictly supportive capacity and are not embedded with Nigerian troops on the frontlines. Instead, their contributions are geared toward strengthening Nigeria’s ability to independently plan and execute counterterrorism operations using improved intelligence inputs.
The MQ-9 Reaper drones involved in the mission are advanced unmanned aerial systems capable of remaining airborne for more than 27 hours at high altitudes. Their endurance and sophisticated surveillance capabilities make them valuable tools for tracking movements across vast and often difficult terrain. While these drones are also equipped for precision strikes in other contexts, officials have made it clear that in Nigeria they are being used solely for intelligence gathering.
Although neither Nigerian nor US officials provided specific examples of operations where American intelligence directly led to successful strikes against terrorist targets, Uba noted that the support has significantly enhanced Nigeria’s ability to “identify, track and respond” to threats in a more timely and coordinated manner.
He further warned that extremist groups such as Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province continue to pose a serious and persistent threat. These groups, he said, are likely to exploit opportunities to carry out attacks and may attempt to stage high-profile operations in order to demonstrate their continued relevance and capability.
As the security situation remains fluid, both Nigeria and the United States appear committed to maintaining and potentially expanding their cooperation, with the goal of curbing insurgency and restoring stability in affected regions.
