Florian Wirtz delivered a sensational performance, scoring twice and providing two assists as Germany secured a thrilling 4–3 victory over Switzerland in an international friendly in Basel.

In a pulsating contest, Switzerland twice took the lead through Dan Ndoye and Breel Embolo, but Germany responded on both occasions, with Wirtz instrumental in every attacking breakthrough.

The 21-year-old’s influence was evident early on, as he provided a precise deep cross for Jonathan Tah to score his first international goal, before later threading a defence-splitting pass to set up Serge Gnabry for Germany’s second equaliser.

Reflecting on his performance, Wirtz admitted there was an element of fortune in one of his goals.

“I would be lying if I said I aimed exactly there with the first goal, but I wanted to get it on target,” he told German broadcaster RTL. “If it goes in like that, I will happily take it. There was some intention.”

Switzerland opened the scoring in the 17th minute, as Ndoye’s powerful run and fierce left-footed strike beat goalkeeper Oliver Baumann at the near post.

Germany responded in the 26th minute when Tah headed home from Wirtz’s expertly delivered cross following a quickly taken corner. However, despite enjoying the majority of possession, Germany struggled to convert their dominance into clear opportunities.

The hosts regained the lead shortly before half-time, with Silvan Widmer delivering an inviting cross that Embolo converted with a diving header after slipping behind the German defence.

Germany levelled once more on the stroke of half-time, as Wirtz produced another moment of quality, threading a perfectly weighted pass through to Gnabry, who calmly finished past Gregor Kobel.

The visitors began to assert greater control after the interval, with Bayern Munich youngster Lennart Karl impressing from the bench. However, it was Wirtz who once again stole the spotlight.

He gave Germany the lead for the first time with a stunning strike from the edge of the penalty area, sending a swerving effort into the top corner via the underside of the crossbar.

Switzerland, however, refused to relent. Substitute Joel Monteiro brought the hosts level with a superb long-range effort, spinning away from his marker before unleashing an unstoppable strike from 25 yards to make it 3–3.

The decisive moment came when Wirtz completed his outstanding display with another superb finish, curling the ball into the net from the edge of the box to seal victory for Germany.

While defensive frailties remain a concern, Germany’s attacking display — led by the exceptional Wirtz — offered an encouraging glimpse ahead of the upcoming World Cup.
