Chelsea have reportedly decided to appoint Xabi Alonso as their new head coach for the 2026-27 season, while Cesc Fàbregas is expected to remain with Como for at least another campaign.

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano, Fàbregas had emerged as one of several names linked with the managerial vacancy at Stamford Bridge in recent weeks.

However, Chelsea are now understood to have settled on Alonso as their preferred choice following his departure from Real Madrid earlier this year.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Romano explained that although Fàbregas is highly admired within Chelsea’s hierarchy, the club never formally approached the former midfielder regarding the position.

Romano added that Chelsea officials are aware of Fàbregas’ long-term commitment to the Como project, with the Spaniard fully focused on continuing the club’s rapid rise in Italian football.

Fàbregas has impressed during his time in charge of the Serie A side and is currently working towards securing European qualification for the club.

Como require just one point from their final two Serie A fixtures to mathematically guarantee qualification for the UEFA Europa League.

The Italian side also remain in contention for a place in the UEFA Champions League, sitting only two points behind the top four heading into the closing stages of the season.

Como are scheduled to host Parma in their final home fixture of the campaign later today.

However, they are expected to be without influential midfielder Nico Paz for the important encounter.
