Bernardo Silva has delivered an emotional tribute to Pep Guardiola after captaining Manchester City to FA Cup glory with a narrow 1-0 victory over Chelsea at Wembley Stadium.

City secured the trophy thanks to a decisive second-half strike from Antoine Semenyo, whose clever finish found the bottom corner beyond goalkeeper Robert Sánchez.

Following the final whistle, Bernardo lifted the FA Cup alongside defender John Stones in what marked an emotional occasion for both players, with their contracts set to expire at the end of the season.

The triumph represented Bernardo’s 18th major honour since joining Manchester City, further cementing his place among the club’s most decorated modern-era players.

Speaking to BBC Sport after the match, the Portuguese midfielder reflected warmly on Guardiola’s influence over his career and admitted the City manager had transformed his understanding of football.

“He completely changed the way I see football,” Bernardo said.

“Eighty per cent of my career has been spent with him as my manager, and everything I hoped to achieve in football happened under him.

“The relationship we have built is extremely strong because we have experienced both frustrations and incredible achievements together.”

When asked about Guardiola’s future amid ongoing speculation surrounding the manager’s long-term plans at the Etihad Stadium, Bernardo chose not to comment directly.

“I care deeply about Manchester City, but that decision belongs to him,” he said.

“It is not for me to speak about that. I simply wish him the very best because I have truly enjoyed sharing these moments with him.”

Bernardo also spoke passionately about the significance of winning the FA Cup and what the competition means to both the club and its supporters.

“The FA Cup is an incredibly special competition,” he added.

“To win it means so much to the players, the coaching staff and everyone connected with the club. After nine years here, I understand exactly how important this trophy is for our supporters.

“Our fans travel to Wembley so often, and we know it is not always easy for them, but they continue supporting us every single time. That makes occasions like this even more special.”

The midfielder admitted lifting silverware at Wembley as captain ranked among the proudest moments of his career.

“To lift another trophy at Wembley — a stadium where we have created so many memories — is a feeling I never take for granted,” Bernardo continued.

“To do it as captain makes this one of the greatest days of my career.”

Manchester City have already secured the League Cup earlier in the campaign, and Bernardo believes the club’s emerging younger generation now has the mentality required to continue winning major honours.

“This young team has now developed a taste for trophies,” he said.

“I genuinely believe they will continue competing for and winning many more titles in the years ahead.”
