Aberdeen have confirmed the signing of Scotland international Stuart Armstrong on a two-year contract.
Aberdeen Sign Stuart Armstrong on Two-Year Deal as Scotland International Returns to the Granite City
The 33-year-old midfielder, who grew up in Aberdeen and attended Hazelhead Academy, most recently featured for Sheffield Wednesday in the English Championship.
Capped 51 times for Scotland and with nearly 150 Premier League appearances to his name, Armstrong brings vast experience and energy to bolster the Dons’ squad ahead of a demanding domestic and European campaign.
Thelin Delighted with Arrival
Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin expressed his excitement at the capture of the veteran midfielder.
“We have been tracking Stuart for some time, and we are so pleased to add a player of his talent and experience to our group,” Thelin said.
“Stuart has enjoyed an impressive career at the top level of the game, and we hope he can be another leader within our squad.
“With such a busy schedule ahead, we want competition in all areas of the pitch, with players who can offer different qualities to how we play.
“We also have several very talented young prospects, and having a core of experienced Scottish players to help guide them has always been part of our strategy.”
From Dundee United to Celtic Glory
Armstrong began his youth career at Dyce Boys Club and Inverness Caledonian Thistle before making his professional breakthrough with Dundee United.
He spent six years on Tayside before moving to Celtic in January 2015, where he lifted eight trophies — including four league titles, two League Cups and two Scottish Cups.
In June 2018, he joined Southampton for a reported £7 million, going on to make 215 appearances across six seasons, scoring 25 goals and providing 25 assists.
Journeyman Career Abroad
After leaving Southampton, Armstrong had a short spell in Major League Soccer with Vancouver Whitecaps before joining Sheffield Wednesday, where he saw out the latter part of the 2024/25 season.
Now back in the North-east, the midfielder is eager to make his mark with the Dons.
“These things always happen quickly, but I am delighted to be here,” Armstrong said.
“I’ve not been back to the city for a long time, so it’s nice to come full circle in a footballing sense.
“For me, this is a good footballing decision. It’s a chance to play competitive, challenging football, and the lure of European competition is exciting.
“I hope I can add something to the team and help us achieve something special together.”
