Thierry Henry has cast doubt over FC Barcelona’s chances of winning the UEFA Champions League this season, suggesting that Arsenal FC and FC Bayern Munich currently look better equipped to lift the trophy.

Barcelona were on the brink of a 1–0 defeat in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie against Newcastle United FC on Tuesday night before a late intervention from Lamine Yamal salvaged a 1–1 draw for the side managed by Hansi Flick at St James’ Park.

In contrast, Bayern Munich produced a commanding display, defeating Atalanta BC 6–1 away from home. The German champions were even able to leave Harry Kane on the bench as he continues his recovery from a calf injury.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are set to face Bayer 04 Leverkusen on Wednesday evening in the first leg of their own Round of 16 encounter. The Premier League side enjoyed an impressive league phase, winning all eight of their matches in the competition.

Henry Highlights Bayern’s Balance

Reflecting on Tuesday’s results, Henry suggested that Bayern currently appear more balanced and tactically organised than Barcelona.

“I think Bayern are far more balanced than Barcelona in terms of how they attack and how they rotate positions,” Henry told CBS Sports.

“You can see that whoever it is — whether it’s the winger moving inside or the striker drifting wide — they all understand their roles. They press well and can be extremely difficult to beat at times.”

Henry also pointed to Barcelona’s inconsistency as a potential obstacle in their quest to win the Champions League.

“It sometimes feels like with Barcelona you can see two completely different performances. For example, in their tie against Atlético Madrid in the Copa del Rey they lost 4–0, and it could easily have been six or seven.

“Then you see another match where it feels like Barcelona could score six, seven or even eight themselves.

“They need to find that consistency and balance if they want to win the competition and truly be considered among the main favourites — although I still believe they are in the mix.”

Carragher Backs Arsenal and Bayern

Former Liverpool defender and pundit Jamie Carragher also weighed in on the debate, suggesting that both Arsenal and Bayern may currently hold an advantage over Barcelona in the race for European glory.

“I think Bayern or Arsenal would beat Barcelona,” Carragher said.

With the knockout stage of the Champions League now underway, the coming weeks will reveal whether Barcelona can improve their consistency or whether Bayern Munich and Arsenal will strengthen their status as leading contenders for Europe’s most prestigious club trophy.
