Lamine Yamal converted a dramatic stoppage-time penalty to rescue FC Barcelona from defeat against Newcastle United FC as the sides played out a 1–1 draw in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie on Tuesday night.

The Magpies appeared to be heading for a famous victory at St James’ Park after Harvey Barnes fired them into the lead in the 86th minute. However, Barcelona were awarded a penalty with virtually the final kick of the match when Dani Olmo was brought down by Malick Thiaw deep into added time.

Yamal, who had been largely quiet during the contest, demonstrated remarkable composure to send Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way from the spot, ensuring the Spanish champions avoided defeat.

Despite the late reprieve, Barcelona will know there is still plenty of work to do when the teams meet again for the second leg on 18 March. Manager Hansi Flick will nevertheless be relieved to leave Tyneside with a draw after an underwhelming display from his side.

Newcastle Start Strong Despite Gordon Absence

Newcastle’s hopes of reaching the quarter-finals suffered an early setback before kick-off when Anthony Gordon was forced to begin the match on the bench due to illness.

Only Kylian Mbappé has scored more goals than Gordon’s 10 in this season’s Champions League, and the England international’s attacking threat was clearly missed as Newcastle attempted to impose themselves early on.

Manager Eddie Howe had described the encounter as one of the biggest matches in the club’s history, and Newcastle began with determination as they sought to respond to their recent FA Cup elimination by Manchester City FC and a disappointing campaign in the Premier League.

Howe made a bold attacking selection, handing a starting role to William Osula ahead of club-record signing Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa.

Osula’s pace immediately caused problems for Barcelona’s high defensive line. Newcastle’s best opportunity of the first half arrived from a corner when Sandro Tonali headed towards goal, only for Barcelona goalkeeper Joan García to spill the effort before being bailed out by a goal-line clearance from Pau Cubarsí.

Barnes Strike Cancelled Out by Late Drama

Newcastle continued to push for a breakthrough after the interval. Anthony Elanga came close to setting up Barnes for a simple finish, but García reacted well to cut out the dangerous low cross.

Barcelona struggled to create clear chances and it took nearly 70 minutes for them to threaten seriously when Robert Lewandowski guided a shot wide from Raphinha’s cross.

That proved to be Lewandowski’s final involvement, with Flick introducing Marcus Rashford as a substitute. Rashford had previously scored twice when the teams met at St James’ Park during the league phase of the competition.

Howe also turned to his bench in search of a decisive moment, bringing on Gordon among several substitutes.

Newcastle thought they had taken the lead earlier when Joelinton found the net after Barnes struck the post, but the effort was ruled out for offside.

Barcelona appeared content to settle for a goalless draw late in the match, a mindset reflected when defender Ronald Araújo attempted to delay play after going down injured. Italian referee Marco Guida refused to allow the defender to immediately re-enter the field.

Newcastle capitalised moments later, with Barnes left unmarked at the far post — an area Araújo would normally have occupied — to convert a cross from Jacob Murphy and give the hosts a deserved lead.

However, Newcastle’s impressive performance was undone in the dying moments when Thiaw dangled a leg and brought down Olmo inside the penalty area.

Yamal calmly dispatched the resulting spot-kick, leaving Newcastle needing a strong performance in the return leg at Camp Nou if they are to secure a place in the quarter-finals.
