Liam Rosenior has defended his goalkeepers after criticism followed Chelsea’s heavy defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League.
Liam Rosenior Defends Chelsea Goalkeepers After Heavy Champions League Defeat to PSG
Chelsea’s hopes of progressing in the competition are hanging in the balance after a 5–2 defeat to the reigning champions in the first leg of their last-16 tie in Paris.
Chelsea Collapse After Late Errors
The match had been finely balanced at 2–2 heading into the final half hour. Chelsea had twice fought back, with Malo Gusto and Enzo Fernández cancelling out earlier goals from Bradley Barcola and Ousmane Dembélé.
However, a costly mistake from goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen allowed Vitinha to restore PSG’s lead. The error triggered a late collapse, with substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scoring twice to seal a convincing victory for the French side.
Chelsea had beaten PSG in last summer’s FIFA Club World Cup final, but they now face the daunting task of overturning a three-goal deficit in the second leg at Stamford Bridge next week.
Goalkeeping Debate Intensifies
Goalkeeping has been a recurring concern for Chelsea this season. Robert Sánchez had been the club’s first-choice goalkeeper for much of the campaign but was dropped by Rosenior following a disappointing performance in the recent defeat to Arsenal.
Since stepping into the side, Jørgensen has also faced scrutiny after committing a costly error in Paris.
Former Liverpool defender and pundit Jamie Carragher suggested Chelsea would struggle to win major honours until they resolve their issues in goal.
Speaking to CBS Sports, Carragher said:
“It was a brilliant game, probably the best Champions League match I’ve seen this season. Chelsea didn’t deserve to lose 5–2, but they only have themselves to blame.
“I’ve been critical of Chelsea for a long time, but I’m deadly serious – they cannot go any further until they sort out the goalkeeping situation.
“The new ownership has spent billions and they have some fantastic players. Liam Rosenior has been excellent, and tactically they were outstanding tonight.
“But big mistakes at centre-back and in goal cost them. That has been an issue and will continue to be one for any Chelsea manager trying to win the Premier League or Champions League.”
Rosenior Backs His Goalkeepers
Despite the criticism, Rosenior insisted both of his goalkeepers possess the qualities required to compete at the highest level.
“Yes, both of them are at the level,” Rosenior said when asked whether Sánchez and Jørgensen were capable of performing in the Champions League.
“They have different qualities. Rob is outstanding from crosses and an excellent shot-stopper.
“Filip brings different qualities. One of them is his calmness in possession, which he showed against Aston Villa when we won 4–1. That calmness allowed us to play through the press.”
Rosenior acknowledged, however, that the mistake which allowed PSG to take the lead proved decisive.
“It’s painful because at 2–2 I felt we were in the ascendancy. We were very close to making it 3–3 – João Pedro’s goal was only an inch offside.
“At the top level, in the Champions League, it comes down to fine margins.”
Jørgensen Accepts Responsibility
The Chelsea manager revealed that Jørgensen immediately accepted responsibility for the error after the match.
“The first thing I will say is credit to him. He held his hands up in the dressing room,” Rosenior explained.
“Mistakes happen. I make mistakes, everyone does. Sometimes they are more costly and painful than others.
“What we have to do now is support Rob, Filip and the whole team. This is a big test of our character.”
Focus Turns to Newcastle Clash
Chelsea must quickly move on from the defeat as they prepare for a crucial Premier League clash with Newcastle United on Saturday.
Currently sitting fifth in the league table, the Blues remain firmly in the race for Champions League qualification and will be looking for a strong response following their difficult night in Paris.
