Jamie Carragher has urged Liam Rosenior to strengthen key areas of his squad after Chelsea suffered a heavy defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League.

The Blues were beaten 5–2 in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie on Wednesday night, continuing a difficult run for Premier League clubs in the knockout stages of the competition.

Late Collapse in Paris

Chelsea had battled back impressively during the match and were level at 2–2 heading into the final stages. However, the game turned in the 74th minute when Vitinha restored PSG’s lead.

The situation worsened for the visitors in the closing minutes as substitute Khvicha Kvaratskhelia scored twice to secure a convincing victory for the French champions.

Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen, who started ahead of Robert Sánchez, came under scrutiny after his misplaced pass led to PSG’s third goal, allowing Vitinha to capitalise with a composed lobbed finish.

Carragher Calls for Summer Reinforcements

Carragher, a former Liverpool defender, praised Rosenior’s tactical approach but warned that Chelsea must strengthen their defence and goalkeeping department if they hope to challenge for major honours next season.

Speaking on CBS Sports, Carragher said:

“It was a brilliant game, probably the best Champions League match I’ve seen this season.

“Chelsea didn’t deserve to lose 5–2, but they only have themselves to blame for that.

“I’ve been critical of Chelsea for a long time, but I’m being deadly serious – they cannot go any further until they sort out the goalkeeping issue. I’ve been saying this consistently.”

Carragher also highlighted the significant investment made by Chelsea’s ownership in recent years.

“The new ownership has spent billions and they have some outstanding players in the squad. In these early stages, Liam Rosenior has been brilliant.

“Looking at how he set the team up tonight, Chelsea caused PSG real problems. Based on how the match was played, they didn’t deserve to lose.”

Defensive Errors Cost Chelsea

Despite acknowledging Chelsea’s positive attacking play and tactical organisation, Carragher emphasised that costly defensive mistakes ultimately determined the outcome.

“Big mistakes at centre-back and goalkeeper cost them, and that has been an issue for some time.

“It will continue to be a problem for any Chelsea manager trying to win the Premier League or the Champions League because, at the moment, they are a million miles away from that level.”

Carragher concluded by reiterating that the defeat was not due to Chelsea’s attacking quality or their manager’s tactical approach.

“That’s why they lost tonight – not because they lack attacking talent or because the manager doesn’t know what he’s doing. Tactically they were excellent.

“But they were let down by a mistake from the goalkeeper at 2–2, the game unravelled, and suddenly it looks like they have almost no chance of progressing.”
