Arsenal winger Max Dowman has made history by becoming the youngest player ever to appear in the UEFA Champions League, featuring as a second-half substitute against Slavia Prague at just 15 years and 308 days old.

Dowman is the first player aged 15 to feature in Europe’s elite competition. The previous record was held by Youssoufa Moukoko, who made his debut for Borussia Dortmund in 2020 just 18 days after turning 16.

Record-Breaking Teen Makes His Mark

The teenager’s latest milestone comes only weeks after he became the second-youngest player in Premier League history — behind his Arsenal teammate Ethan Nwaneri — following his debut against Leeds United in August.

Despite still being a school pupil, Dowman has already featured for the Gunners in several competitions this season, including substitute appearances in the Premier League against reigning champions Liverpool, as well as in two EFL Cup fixtures.

Dowman was introduced in the 72nd minute of Arsenal’s 3–0 victory over Slavia Prague, replacing Leandro Trossard. No further goals were scored after his appearance, but his introduction marked a symbolic moment for both the club and the competition.

Rising Star With a Remarkable Journey

A left-footed attacking midfielder, Dowman was born in Chelmsford, Essex, northeast of London, and joined Arsenal’s academy at just five years old in May 2015.

He made his debut for Arsenal’s Under-18 side at 13 and went on to become the youngest scorer in UEFA Youth League history at 14, representing the Under-19 team.

Dowman’s prodigious rise continued when he was invited by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to train with the senior squad in December last year, while still only 14. He also impressed during the club’s pre-season tour of Asia, featuring in matches against AC Milan and Newcastle United.

Balancing Football and Education

Due to Premier League regulations governing under-18 players, Dowman must change into his training and match kit in a separate dressing room from the senior squad.

Despite his growing fame, the young star maintains a balance between football and education — having recently returned to school in Essex after the summer holidays.
