Spears, 41, and 29-year-old Asghari separated nearly three weeks ago, and he is seeking spousal support and attorneys’ fees in their divorce, according to Asghari’s divorce filing.

Britney Spears’ husband Sam Asghari has filed for divorce from the American pop superstar after 14 months of marriage.

Asghari, a 29-year-old Iranian-born model and actor, filed a petition to end the marriage with the Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, citing “irreconcilable differences” as the reason, according to court documents.

His divorce petition says the pair have been separated since July 28. Asghari says in the filing that he will try to get financial support from Spears, while blocking her from getting any from him. He also seeks to have her pay for his divorce lawyers.

Spears and Asghari got married last June in front of guests including Selena Gomez, Drew Barrymore, Paris Hilton, and Madonna, in a wedding seen as a milestone in Spears’ newly reclaimed life after the dissolution just six months earlier of the court-ordered conservatorship that controlled her life for more than 13 years.

The pair, who became engaged in September 2021, first met in 2016 when Asghari co-starred with Spears in the music video for her song “Slumber Party”.

Spears cited her desire to marry Asghari as among the reasons she wanted an end to the conservatorship, which she said was preventing it. Both announced their engagement as it became clear she would be freed from the conservatorship, which ended in November 2021.

The singer said she and Asghari lost a baby early in her pregnancy last May, about a month before their marriage, which was the first for Asghari and the third for Spears.

Spears was married for about 55 hours in 2004 to her childhood friend Jason Alexander before the marriage was annulled. Alexander attempted to crash her wedding to Asghari and was later convicted of misdemeanor trespassing and battery.

She was also married to dancer Kevin Federline in 2004 before filing for divorce in 2006. Both share two sons – 17-year-old Sean Preston and Jayden James, 16 – who are in Federline’s custody.

Spears was placed in the conservatorship run by her father in 2008. At first, she continued to release records, make videos, and perform live, including a major concert residency in Las Vegas. But as she appeared less frequently in public, fans began to demand that she be released from the arrangement, in what eventually become a major #FreeBritney movement.

At the time of her nuptials to Asghari, Spears wrote in an Instagram post that their wedding was “the most spectacular day.” Asghari last shared a post featuring Spears on his Instagram on Valentine’s Day.

Spears’ memoir, The Woman in Me, is scheduled to be released in October.
