The 80s Inspired DLC For Far Cry 3 Has Become A Cult Classic For Gamers And Retro-Enthusiasts Alike

Blood Dragon is a 2013 DLC for Far Cry 3, later tooled as a Stand-Alone Game for the 2014 Far Cry Compilation which contains it and Far Cry 3 along with Far Cry 2, was developed by Ubisoft Montreal and is set in the dystopian future of 2007.

In Blood Dragon you play as Rex Power Colt (Played by Michael Biehn), a soldier who was killed during Vietnam War II and is brought back from the dead as a Mark IV Cyber-Commando to fight Communism once more during the Second Cold War, who is tasked with taking down rogue US Army Colonel, Ike Sloan (Played by Danny Blanco Hall), and his personal army of Cyber-Soldiers called Omega Force.

The DLC is an homage to 1980s action, post apocalyptic, scifi, and war movies like The Terminator, Platoon, Krull, Threads, Evil Dead, Rambo, Robocop, The Karate Kid, Red Dawn, and Miami Connection to name a few.

The iconic soundtrack for Blood Dragon was created by Australian synthwave duo Power Glove, and the CD alone has sold over 3 million copies since it was released back in 2013.

The DLC itself has sold over 5.3 million copies by 2020, and has a spinoff game named Trials of the Blood Dragon released in 2016, which was a commercial failure.

Following the release of Far Cry 6 in 2021, players were able to access a remastered version of Blood Dragon as a Pre-Order bonus, but players found it to be buggy so stuck with the original version.

In 2021, Ubisoft announced that Netflix would be making an animated series called Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, who's art style is inspired by the Saturday morning cartoons kids would watch in the 80s such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, He-Man and The Masters of The Universe, Thunder Cats, G.I. Joe, The Transformers, and Superfriends.

The game's high paced combat keeps players on their toes, you can chain kill enemies with your melee weapon, throw ninja stars, shoot lasers at your foes, and revel in the 80s cheese packed into this sandwich of a DLC, all of which coupled with the previously mentioned Power Glove soundtrack are why players keep coming back for more as Blood Dragon turns 10 years old next year.

The highlight of the game comes at the end, when Rex gets to storm Colonel Sloan's compound whilst riding on a Battle Armored Dragon Assault Strike System (BADASS) as Vince DiCola's War from the Rocky IV soundtrack blares whilst you shoot laser gatling guns rigged on top of the BADASS at Sloan's troops and nuclear missiles before your kill the rogue Colonel by ramming your robot arm into his chest and activating the Kill-Star, causing Sloan to explode in a series of Laser-Beams and chunks of gore .
