One woman is dead, and multiple homes were destroyed after devastating flash floods moved through Switzerland and Jefferson County in Indiana.
According to the Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency, around 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jefferson County experienced excessive rains that fell in a short period of time, resulting in a flash flood along Brushy Fork Creek.
Local rain gauges' reported in excess of 9 inches in three hours.
According to officials, an initial 911 report from the area indicated there was a female resident unable to exit her hours in the 8000 block of E. Brushy Fork Road due to water.
Responders encountered difficulty accessing the residence due to the flooded roads, damaged or blocked bridges and debris obstructions.
Upon arrival, officials said it appeared that the property's structures had been washed away and no residents were located. Over the course of the next few hours' extensive damage over a large area became obvious.
According to authorities, multiple reports revealed five residents were unaccounted for and by 8 p.m., all but one was located and no injuries were reported.
