Leeds United have released a statement distancing club captain Ethan Ampadu from a widely circulated image online showing his son wearing a Galatasaray football shirt.

The Championship-winning club explained that the Wales international is “sensitive to” the potential ramifications of the image, particularly in light of the tragic deaths of Leeds supporters Christopher Loftus and Kevin Speight. The two fans were murdered in Istanbul in 2000, on the eve of a UEFA Cup fixture against Galatasaray.

In a statement, the club said:

“Leeds United are aware of an image circulating online featuring Ethan Ampadu’s son. Ethan separated from his partner several months ago and has no responsibility for the image in question. He is aware of, and sensitive to, the tragic loss suffered by the Loftus and Speight families.

“The club kindly requests that Ethan’s privacy be respected during what is a difficult time for him personally. Our captain has displayed outstanding leadership both on and off the pitch this season, showing unwavering commitment to the club, its history, and the wider Leeds community. Ethan has the full support of everyone at Leeds United. The club will not be making any further comment.”

Ampadu, 24, has firmly established himself at Elland Road following several loan spells away from Chelsea, where he made 12 senior appearances after signing from Exeter City at the age of 16.

His previous loan moves included stints at RB Leipzig, Sheffield United, Venezia and Spezia before he joined Leeds United on a permanent deal in 2023. He has since become an integral part of Daniel Farke’s side, which secured promotion this season after missing out in the 2023–24 play-off final.

Reflecting on the club’s success in clinching the Championship title, Ampadu said:

“The staff and the players who were at Wembley felt like we were at rock bottom that day because we didn’t achieve what we set out to do. So to put that right, even if it’s a year later, is a really sweet moment.

“We’re a team full of leaders, full of character. We’ve got a strong mentality. There have been setbacks and matches we’ve been unhappy with, but I think it’s a credit to the lads and the staff that we kept pushing every day regardless of the results.

“This club is truly special. Everyone who wears the shirt knows it’s a huge honour to play for Leeds United and to represent both the city and the fans. Being able to celebrate with them and in front of them made it all the more special.”
