For some time, it has appeared almost inevitable that Carlo Ancelotti, with Real Madrid seemingly moving on from him, would take charge of Brazil after a prolonged pursuit of the Italian coach. Ancelotti is set to take over the Brazilian national team following his final La Liga commitment with Real Madrid on 25th May, as confirmed by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) on Monday.

However, the official confirmation from Ancelotti only came in the past 48 hours, following Real Madrid's loss of their title hopes after a 4-3 defeat to Barcelona in Sunday's Clasico. Ancelotti has now signed a one-year deal with Brazil, lasting until the end of the 2026 World Cup, with an option to extend his contract until the 2030 tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Spain, Morocco, and Portugal.

Casemiro’s Role in Ancelotti’s Decision

According to Marca, Manchester United midfielder Casemiro played a significant role in Ancelotti’s decision to accept the Brazil job. The Brazilian, who is set for a recall to the national team after being dropped by former coach Dorival Júnior, was contacted by Ancelotti for advice. The Spanish outlet explains that the two have kept in touch since Casemiro’s departure from Real Madrid, and during their recent conversations, Ancelotti sought Casemiro’s opinion on the possibility of him taking over the Selecao.

Ancelotti left the conversation more persuaded by the idea, easing any concerns he had about the role. Additionally, Ancelotti will have the support of Neymar Jr., who is also expected to return to the national team under his stewardship. Another United player, Antony, currently on loan at Real Betis, is also likely to be recalled for the Brazil squad.

A Unique Situation at Real Madrid

While Julen Lopetegui had originally intended to lead Spain to the World Cup before returning to Real Madrid, few managers have ever taken charge of matches at the Santiago Bernabéu while already announced as the coach of another club. It will be fascinating to observe the reaction of the Bernabéu faithful as Ancelotti, the club’s most successful manager in history, prepares to depart following what has been a disappointing final year.
