Luis Galván, the former Argentina defender and member of the 1978 World Cup-winning team, passed away on Monday at the age of 77, according to a statement from the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
Local news outlets reported that Galván had been receiving treatment for pneumonia at the Reina Fabiola Clinic in Cordoba for several weeks prior to his death.
In its official statement, the AFA expressed deep condolences, stating, "The AFA and its entire leadership extend heartfelt sympathies to his family and friends during this painful time."
Galván, who played as a centre-back, was part of Argentina's squad that triumphed 3-1 over the Netherlands in the 1978 World Cup final, held in Buenos Aires. He also represented Argentina in the 1982 World Cup in Spain, accumulating a total of 34 caps for his national team. He retired from international football in 1983.
After his international career, Galván continued to play for his beloved club, Talleres de Córdoba, where he set a club record with 503 appearances. His playing career at the club spanned 17 years, with two separate stints, the first from 1970 to 1982 and the second from 1986 to 1987.
