Arsenal’s biggest match of the season is just days away.

The Gunners travel to Paris on Wednesday night to take on Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final. The French outfit secured a narrow advantage in the first leg at the Emirates, courtesy of Ousmane Dembélé’s lone goal, leaving Mikel Arteta’s side with work to do in the return fixture.

Arteta had hoped to enter the midweek showdown off the back of a morale-boosting result against Bournemouth, but a 2–1 home defeat to the Cherries on Saturday compounded Arsenal’s frustrations. While PSG also suffered a 2–1 loss—away to Strasbourg—the Parisians fielded a much-rotated side, whereas Arsenal lined up with what was virtually a full-strength XI.

"Well, we certainly wanted to create a really good vibe, and a positive result would really help us to build what we wanted towards Wednesday," Arteta said after the defeat. "So, what we have created now is a lot of rage, anger, frustration, and a bad feeling in the tummy. So, make sure that we use that for Wednesday to have a massive performance in Paris, win the game and be in the final."

It is highly likely Arteta will consider a few tactical and personnel changes for the second leg, as Arsenal must score to keep their European dream alive. Below, football.london explores some of the key changes Arteta could make.

Timber in for White

Ben White featured for 86 minutes against Bournemouth and provided solid support for Bukayo Saka down the right flank. Jurrien Timber, however, was omitted from the squad at the weekend due to a knock sustained during the first leg against PSG.

Arteta has admitted he is not confident about Timber’s availability, but the situation remains fluid. Should the Dutch international be passed fit and manage to rejoin training, it is expected he would return to the starting XI, with White potentially dropping to the bench.

Merino to Lead the Line over Trossard

Leandro Trossard found it difficult to make an impact on Saturday while operating as the central striker. In doing so, he kept Mikel Merino—who has excelled in that role—out of the line-up. The Spaniard is now tipped to return to the side for the decisive clash in Paris.

Merino brings physicality and a strong ability to link up with the likes of Saka and Gabriel Martinelli. With eight goals already this season, he’ll be aiming to add another on the European stage and help Arsenal overturn the deficit.

Nwaneri over Ødegaard?

This potential change may raise eyebrows, but it is not without merit. Martin Ødegaard has been struggling for form of late. Despite registering an assist for Declan Rice’s goal at the weekend, the Norwegian appeared largely ineffective throughout the remainder of the match.

As captain, Ødegaard remains a central figure in Arteta’s plans, and it would be a bold move to bench him for such a high-stakes encounter. However, giving 18-year-old Ethan Nwaneri a start in Paris would represent a huge show of faith and a statement of intent—one that could pay off in a high-pressure scenario.
