Manchester United’s emphatic win against Athletic Club may inadvertently provide Arsenal with a significant advantage ahead of the summer transfer window. The Red Devils secured a commanding 3–0 first-leg lead at Old Trafford, marking arguably the finest performance under manager Rúben Amorim thus far.

Goals from Casemiro and a brace from Bruno Fernandes sealed the victory against the 10-man Spanish side, putting United firmly on course for the Europa League final. They could yet face Tottenham Hotspur in an all-English European showdown, after Spurs defeated Bodo/Glimt in their own semi-final first leg.

However, the celebrations may not be limited to the red side of Manchester, as Arsenal could stand to benefit from United’s success. Reports suggest that United’s triumph strengthens Arsenal’s prospects of signing Athletic Club star Nico Williams in the upcoming window.

Last summer, Williams turned down approaches from both Arsenal and Barcelona, choosing instead to remain at the Basque outfit and inherit the club’s iconic No. 10 shirt. Yet the 2025 summer transfer window could signal a change, with the highly-rated Spain international now potentially open to a move.

According to The Times, Williams is keen to stay at Athletic should they win the Europa League and thus secure a place in next season’s UEFA Champions League. Failure to do so, however, may encourage the winger to consider a transfer elsewhere.

Given United’s 3–0 aggregate advantage, Athletic face a daunting task heading into the return leg at Old Trafford next week. The odds of Ernesto Valverde’s men progressing to the final now appear decidedly slim.

Arsenal, meanwhile, are determined to bolster their attacking options ahead of the 2025–26 campaign. While the club is prioritising the signing of a new centre-forward, reinforcements on the wings are also being considered.

Williams has continued his fine form in Spain this season. The 22-year-old has recorded 11 goals and seven assists across all competitions, following his standout performances in Spain’s Euro 2024-winning campaign in Germany.

Despite renewed links to Arsenal and Barcelona, Williams insists his focus remains solely on guiding Athletic Club to the Europa League final.

Speaking ahead of the first leg, Williams said:

“The dream is to lift the champion’s trophy at San Mamés. I have the opportunity to make history at this club. The dream never ends. I’m 100 per cent focused on Thursday, on reaching the final and winning it. I don’t want to look any further. I’m super happy here and… well. I’ve always wanted to feel important here. This is a 10/10 season for me.”
