Kenya: Lawmaker shot dead in Nairobi

Charles Ong'ondo Were, a Kenyan member of parliament, was fatally shot on the streets of Nairobi, according to an announcement made by the Speaker of the National Assembly.
Speaker Moses Wetang'ula shared the tragic news on his X (formerly Twitter) account, describing it as "devastating" and expressing deep sorrow over the incident. "It is with profound shock and unspeakable sorrow that I have this evening received the devastating news of the fatal shooting of Hon. Ong'ondo Were," Wetang'ula stated.
The fatal shooting reportedly occurred at approximately 19:30 local time (16:30 UTC/GMT). According to eyewitnesses cited by local media, the lawmaker was attacked by two individuals who were riding a motorcycle at the time of the assault.
Ong'ondo Were was affiliated with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), a prominent political party in Kenya, and served as the representative for the Kasipul constituency located in Homa Bay County, a predominantly rural region in the western part of the country.
Raila Odinga, the leader of the ODM, had contested the 2022 presidential election but was defeated by William Ruto. Following the election, Odinga rejected the results, alleging electoral irregularities. In the months that followed, Odinga and Ruto engaged in negotiations aimed at addressing the contentious issues that arose after the polls.
