Ghana's President Mahama Suspends Chief Justice Amid Investigation

On Tuesday, Ghana's President John Dramani Mahama announced the immediate suspension of the country's chief justice, Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, pending the outcome of an investigation, according to an official statement. Justice Torkornoo, who took office in June 2023, had previously presided over the swearing-in ceremony of President Mahama in January for his second term.
The suspension follows three separate petitions calling for her removal from office. However, the specific allegations against her have not been publicly revealed. In the statement, President Mahama indicated that there was sufficient evidence to support the claims made in the petitions.
To thoroughly investigate the matter, President Mahama has appointed a five-member committee.
