On Monday, Katy Perry, Lauren Sanchez, and four other women flew to space aboard a Blue Origin rocket. The 10-minute flight marked the first all-woman crewed mission since 1963. Perry shared her excitement about inspiring her daughter with the historic flight. Blue Origin aims to compete with SpaceX and Virgin Galactic in space tourism.
Katy Perry Blasts Off on Bezos' Blue Origin Rocket with All-Woman Crew

A group of six women, including American singer-songwriter Katy Perry, soared into the upper reaches of Earth’s atmosphere on Monday aboard a Blue Origin rocket. The spaceflight was organized by Blue Origin, the aerospace company owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.
Among the passengers was Bezos’s fiancée, Lauren Sanchez — a U.S. author and philanthropist — who joined the all-female crew as they launched from western Texas around 8:30 a.m. local time (1330 GMT). The journey lasted approximately 10 minutes, with the rocket making a safe return to Earth, aided by parachutes.
The rest of the crew comprised TV host Gayle King, film producer Kerianne Flynn, former NASA aerospace engineer Aisha Bowe, and Amanda Nguyen, a civil rights activist and founder of a campaign group against sexual violence.
This mission marked a significant milestone as it was the first all-woman crewed spaceflight since Russian cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova’s groundbreaking solo mission in 1963.
The passengers were taken more than 100 kilometers (roughly 60 miles) above the Earth's surface, crossing the Karman line — the internationally recognized boundary of space.
The flight utilized a fully automated launch vehicle. After a vertical ascent, the crew capsule separated mid-flight, later descending back to Earth, cushioned by parachutes and aided by a retro rocket for a soft landing.
Katy Perry, renowned for chart-toppers like “Firework” and “California Gurls,” experienced a brief moment of weightlessness alongside her fellow passengers. She recently revealed in an Elle magazine interview that her decision to join the flight was inspired by her daughter, Daisy, whom she shares with actor Orlando Bloom.
“I want to inspire her to never place limits on her dreams,” Perry said. “I’m just so excited to see the inspiration through her eyes and the light in her eyes when she sees that rocket go, and she goes back to school the next day and says, ‘Mom went to space.’”
The flight adds to Blue Origin’s growing list of notable passengers, which includes "Star Trek" actor William Shatner, who journeyed into space with the company in 2021.
Although Blue Origin does not disclose the cost of its spaceflights, the company is steadily expanding its ambitions to carry space tourists into orbit, directly competing with Elon Musk’s SpaceX.
Virgin Galactic, the aerospace company founded by British entrepreneur Richard Branson, also offers sub-orbital spaceflights for those able to afford the high price tag that comes with the experience.
