Barcelona are not expected to encounter any difficulties in securing a new long-term contract for key defender Jules Koundé, despite reported transfer interest from Chelsea.

The London club are actively seeking defensive reinforcements ahead of next season, as Benoît Badiashile and Tosin Adarabioyo are not considered reliable first-choice options at the highest level. Additionally, Chelsea have faced ongoing issues at right-back, with Reece James even being deployed in midfield in recent weeks.

Koundé’s versatility—excelling both as a central defender, where he made his name at Sevilla, and at right-back—has made him an attractive target.

However, according to Marca, the French international has reassured Barcelona officials in early discussions that he remains committed to the club and is open to extending his contract, which currently runs until 2027.

Koundé has expressed his desire to stay at Camp Nou and has "no intention of leaving." The 26-year-old has featured in every match across all competitions this season, starting the majority of his 45 appearances.

He reportedly feels “important” under new manager Hansi Flick and is regarded as a “great fit” within the dressing room. These factors have motivated him to pursue a contract extension, with initial negotiations between Koundé, sporting director Deco, and Barcelona’s management deemed positive.

A Contrast to Ronald Araújo’s Situation

Koundé’s position at Barcelona contrasts sharply with that of vice-captain Ronald Araújo. The Uruguayan defender recently signed a new contract with the club but has struggled for regular game time since recovering from a long-term injury. His situation is further complicated by an affordable €65 million release clause, which makes a summer departure highly feasible should a club choose to activate it.

While Chelsea have not been strongly linked with Araújo, he could emerge as a viable option should they consider him a suitable fit to strengthen their defence and align with their ambitions.
