A gunman killed one person and injured another near Haifa, Israel. The attacker, believed to be Palestinian, was "neutralized" by police. This marks the first such attack since Israel resumed military action against Hamas.

One person was killed, and at least one other was seriously injured when a gunman opened fire near the northern Israeli city of Haifa on Monday, according to first responders.

The Israeli police reported that they had "neutralized" the suspect at a junction just outside the city. A police statement said, "A terrorist opened fire at civilians and was immediately neutralized by police forces present at the scene." While the police did not specify the attacker's nationality, the use of the term "terrorist" suggests they believe the attacker was Palestinian.

Reports indicate that the attacker initially drove his car into a group of people at a bus stop before getting out and assaulting them. He allegedly began the attack with a knife before opening fire.

The Magen David Adom emergency services confirmed that a 75-year-old man was killed by the gunfire. Another victim, a 20-year-old man, was receiving urgent treatment for his injuries. First responders stated that they had provided "medical treatment to a young man ... who had been hit by a vehicle and suffered penetrating injuries in the attack."

This incident follows a similar attack at a bus stop in Haifa just three weeks ago, which resulted in one death and multiple injuries.

Monday's attack is the first since Israel ended a negotiated ceasefire with the Hamas militant group in Gaza and resumed military strikes and a ground offensive. Since the start of the war with Hamas—sparked by an attack by Palestinian militant groups in southern Israel—there have been multiple attacks by Palestinian militants within Israel.

According to Gaza's Health Ministry, Israeli strikes have resulted in the deaths of over 50,000 Palestinians in the enclave as of Sunday.
