Thursday’s UEFA Europa League second-leg encounter between Anderlecht and Fenerbahçe was suspended for 15 minutes due to violent clashes in the stands. However, amidst the chaos, there was a moment of warmth between José Mourinho and a steward in Belgium.

Mourinho’s Fenerbahçe side had secured a 3-0 victory in the first leg in Turkey, and they extended their aggregate lead to 4-0 when Youssef En-Nesyri found the net within the first four minutes in Belgium.

However, shortly after the goal, the match was halted following disturbing scenes involving supporters.

Riot police swiftly intervened to restore order in the stands, while stewards also attempted to manage the situation after warnings were displayed on the stadium’s big screen, urging fans to maintain discipline.

Referee Sandro Schärer gathered both teams at the centre of the pitch before making the decision to pause the match and send the players back to the dressing rooms.

Fortunately, following a delay of approximately 15 minutes, the players returned to the field, and play resumed.

Shortly after the restart, Anderlecht reduced the deficit on the night, with Luis Vázquez scoring in the 19th minute.

The first half produced no further goals, but one of its most memorable moments unfolded on the touchline.

Cameras captured Fenerbahçe manager Mourinho affectionately placing his arm around the shoulder of a much shorter steward. The steward initially smiled but soon appeared slightly awkward.

The incident was broadcast live on TNT Sports 3, with the commentator remarking: “José’s made a friend!”

The match concluded in a 2-2 draw after second-half goals from Vázquez and Yusuf Akçiçek.

That result saw Fenerbahçe progress to the Europa League round of 16 with a 5-2 aggregate victory.

Mourinho’s side will now face either Rangers or Olympiacos in the next stage.
