Luis Rubiales was found guilty of sexually assaulting Jenni Hermoso with a non-consensual kiss after the 2023 Women's World Cup final. He was fined over €10,000 and barred from contacting her for a year but was acquitted of coercion.

Former Spanish football federation president Luis Rubiales has been found guilty of sexually assaulting Jenni Hermoso by kissing her on the lips without her consent after the 2023 Women's World Cup final. Spain's High Court announced the verdict on Thursday, sentencing Rubiales to a fine of over €10,000 ($10,434.00). Additionally, he has been ordered to stay at least 200 meters (656 feet) away from Hermoso and is prohibited from contacting her for one year. However, he was acquitted of coercion.

The charges against Rubiales stemmed from his non-consensual kiss and alleged attempts to pressure Hermoso into publicly stating that the kiss was mutual. Rubiales denied the accusations, maintaining that the kiss had been consensual. In contrast, Hermoso insisted otherwise, stating that she "felt disrespected" by Rubiales and that the incident had "stained one of the happiest days of my life."

The case, which gained widespread attention and reignited discussions about sexism in Spain, saw prosecutors pushing for a two-and-a-half-year prison sentence for Rubiales—one year for sexual assault and 18 months for allegedly coercing Hermoso, 34, into downplaying the incident. Rubiales’ defense team argued for his full acquittal on both charges.

Three other individuals who had also been on trial for allegedly pressuring Hermoso into supporting Rubiales’ version of events were acquitted.

While a verdict had not been expected for several weeks, the court reached its decision in just under a week following the conclusion of the trial.
