Pakistan: Ex-Prime Minister Imran Khan Convicted of Graft, Sentenced to 14 Years
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to 14 years in prison in a case involving land corruption. The verdict was issued by Judge Nasir Javed Rana in a makeshift courtroom located at Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail, where Khan has been detained since August 2023.
Following the announcement of the sentence, Khan addressed the media, stating, "I will neither make any deal nor seek any relief."
Additionally, Khan's wife, Bushra Bibi, was sentenced to seven years in prison. She was immediately taken into custody after the ruling was delivered.
While waiting for the full details of the decision, Khan's political party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), issued a statement claiming that the Al-Qadir Trust case against him and his wife lacks a solid legal foundation and is expected to ultimately collapse.
Imran Khan, a former cricket star, has previously been convicted on three separate charges: corruption, disclosing official secrets, and violating marriage laws. He received sentences of 10, 14, and seven years, respectively, for these charges. According to Pakistani law, these sentences will be served concurrently.
The couple faces accusations of accepting land as a gift from real estate tycoon Malik Riaz in exchange for laundered money, a transaction alleged to have occurred during Khan's tenure as the Prime Minister of Pakistan.
Khan, who is 72 years old, was removed from office in April 2022 following a no-confidence vote. Both Khan and his wife were formally charged in February 2024.
Khan has vehemently denied the charges, asserting that he is being targeted by political rivals to prevent him from participating in future elections. Since his arrest in 2023, his supporters have engaged in violent protests, expressing their discontent with the legal proceedings.
