Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu Hassan has pledged decisive action following the collapse of a building in Dar es Salaam city on Saturday, which resulted in the deaths of 20 people.

The death toll from a collapsed building in Dar es Salaam, the commercial capital of Tanzania, rose to 20 on Wednesday, according to AFP. President Samia Suluhu Hassan vowed to improve safety standards following the tragic incident. She visited the site of the collapse, which occurred on Saturday, after returning from the G20 summit in Brazil.

Rescue operations were still ongoing, and the exact cause of the collapse was under investigation. "Our main efforts were focused on rescuing people. Unfortunately, as of 9am today, we have lost 20 of our fellow citizens, while three survivors are still receiving medical treatment," President Hassan stated in a speech delivered near the scene of the disaster.

The President described the incident as "terrifying" and emphasized its importance as a wake-up call to prioritize the safety of buildings. "This incident was terrifying. It sends us a message to prioritize the safety of our buildings," she said. "It is clear that its walls were not built to standard. We must not allow such an incident to happen again."

In response to the collapse, the government has formed a commission tasked with inspecting all buildings in the busy Kariakoo market area, where the collapse occurred. President Hassan assured that the commission's findings would be made public. "We will not hesitate to demolish unsafe buildings," she pledged.
