Nigeria's power grid has collapsed for the second time in less than 24 hours, causing a nationwide outage.

Nigeria’s power grid has collapsed again for the second time in less than 24 hours, resulting in a nationwide power outage.

The first collapse occurred on Monday evening, disrupting both domestic and business activities across the country. Nigeria has long suffered from an unreliable electricity supply, despite the government investing billions of naira into the energy sector in attempts to address the problem.

However, less than 24 hours after the initial collapse, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) confirmed on Tuesday that there had been another system failure. In a statement, the company announced:

“Dear Valued Customer, Kindly be informed there was a system collapse at 09:17 hrs, which has resulted in a loss of power supply across our network. We are currently working with our partners as we hope for speedy restoration of the grid. We will keep you updated as soon as power supply is restored.”

Earlier reports from the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) indicated that power outages caused by the grid collapse on Monday evening had been partially restored to some of its service areas.

Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, is home to the nation’s central government, and the city, along with surrounding areas such as Deidei, Suleja, Lugbe, and Kuje, had power restored on Tuesday at about 5:15 a.m.

Customers in the AEDC region had been notified of the power disruption on Monday evening, with the company explaining that the outage was due to a collapse of the National grid. In a statement shared on its official Twitter account, the company stated that the grid had failed at approximately 6:58 p.m. and assured customers:

"Be rest assured that we are working with relevant stakeholders to restore power as soon as the grid stabilises.”
